New Marine awareness association formed

A press release has been issued by a new association called ‘Manx Sea Matters’; who intend to keep a watch over anything that may impact on Manx territorial seas.

The diverse group of concerned individuals, and representatives of various marine related organizations, got together on Friday last week to discuss the issuing of the latest ‘prospecting license’, by the Department of Trade & Industry, to Island Aggregates.

This most recent license allows Island Aggregates to investigate two off-shore areas, one between Jurby and the Point of Ayre, and another off the north-east coast, for their potential for aggregate extraction. This follows on from an initial license, issued in April this year, for similar investigations off the coast near Maughold.

The Association’s concern is that these areas are important fish breeding grounds and support habitats that provide feeding grounds for sea birds, whales and dolphins; and they want to be assured that meaningful consultation will be undertaken by the DTI with interested parties.

Association spokesperson Michelle Haywood says: “Whilst we have been assured that a decision has not yet been made about whether full extraction licenses will be granted, we are seeking further clarification about the environmental impact of removing several metres of the surface of the sea bed. DTI has committed to further consultation and debate before any licenses for wide-scale extraction are granted. Manx Sea Matters welcome this offer and looks forward to ensuring that all those who use and enjoy the sea, above or below the surface, for work or recreation, have their concerns fully addressed.”

Groups that have joined the association so far include, IOM Friends of the Earth, IOM Fish Producers Organization, IOM sub Aqua Association, Marine Committee of the Manx Wildlife Trust, Manx Whale & Dolphin Watch and IOM Angling Association.

Membership is open to anyone with an interest in the sea surrounding our island, whether they are a user or not. Further details can be obtained by contacting Michelle on 300090.
