Zero Waste Mann and SITA to launch their ‘They are not for Burning’ campaign
This Saturday, 22nd September, will see the launch of a campaign to encourage residents and businesses to remove certain items from the waste stream and to recycle them instead.
The ‘They are not for Burning’ campaign is a joint initiative between recycling charity Zero Waste Mann and Energy from Waste (EfW) operator SITA.
One of ZWM’s key aims is to eliminate waste in the Island, whilst SITA are keen to encourage recycling and remove unhelpful fractions from the EfW’s waste stream.
The campaign highlights:
- that it is a waste of energy to try to burn items like glass and metals, that do not burn so they do not produce any energy, and which can be relatively easily recycled
- that it is a waste of valuable resources in burning aluminium, which is readily recycled using a fraction of the energy required to produce from ore
- that burning batteries is not the best environmental solution for this potentially valuable resources.
All glass bottles and jars, aluminium cans and batteries have alternative disposal routes available, and should be taken to the bring banks or civic amenity sites. Dry cell batteries can also be taken to Co-Op shops.
Jeff Robinson, General Manager of SITA, welcomed the initiative and commented, “SITA wish to help the Island to manage its waste in a sustainable and responsible way. By removing these items from the waste stream, which otherwise will end up at the plant to be burnt, you will be helping us all to achieve this aim.”
Muriel Garland, Chair of ZWM, also said, “We hope that everybody will support our campaign by not putting glass, aluminium, cans or batteries in litter, waste or wheelie bins. SITA doesn’t want them, and it doesn’t make economic or environmental sense to throw them away and for them to end up in the incinerator.”
Muriel continued, “So the next time you go to throw these items away please think:
Don’t burn it – recycle it!”
