The Manx Herald has received reports that the incinerator, at Richmond Hill in Braddan, has been dealing with a fire, in the waste reception bunker, since Sunday (20th April).

The cause has not yet been established but initially the incident was handled by SITA operatives dousing the waste with water themselves.

However, it is understood that the fire flared up last night (Wednesday 23rd April) to such an extent that the fire brigade finally had to be called.

The incinerator has been plagued by problems this year, with the turbine having been sent away for the second time for repair, and has suffered from longer than normal periods of shut down. This has resulted in a build up of waste in the bunker which has compounded the problem of dealing with a fire.

Currently there is no real contingency, for the disposal of municipal waste, in the event that the incinerator is closed down for any extended period of time.

The Manx Herald will continue to provide up dates as the story unfolds.

What happens to the water being used to put out the fire. I assume it will be heavily contaminated with toxins due to the nature of 'rusbbish'. Is it processed in any way before leaving the plant or does it just go striaght into the drainage system? Could it end up in the rivers?
