Peter Karran, MHK, and fellow officers of the Liberal Vannin Party, have just returned from the 55th Congress of Liberal International held in Belfast, on 15 -17 May 2008; and hosted by the Alliance Party of Northern Ireland.

Mr Karran addressed the meeting on the subject “The Liberal Vannin Party Isle of Man” after which the voting members of LI declared unanimously the acceptance of Liberal Vannin as an observer member with congratulations from John Lord Alderdyce, President of LI.

Delegates applauded Liberal Vannin on its recent successes in the local authority elections and were hugely surprised that the government of the Isle of Man had no opposition and in their opinion no fair democracy. During the conference Mr Karran attended a luncheon for Liberal Party Leaders.

Peter Karran says “I was impressed with the discussions that took place. These underlined the need for the political change that has to take place as far as the island is concerned if it is to achieve political democracy”.

Liberal International (LI) is the world federation of liberal and democratic political parties, the pre-eminent network for promoting liberalism.
