Call to support Earth Hour this Saturday

Font size: Decrease font Enlarge font

Isle of Man Friends of the Earth, and the One World Centre, are calling for local people and businesses to support Earth Hour tomorrow evening.

In December, this year, world leaders meet, in Copenhagen, and could make the commitment to reduce carbon emissions to a level that would help to slow down the impact of climate change. Earth Hour is a global movement to send them a clear message of solidarity asking 1 billion people to turn off their lights from 8.30pm - 9.30 pm on March 28th.

You are invited to visit: wwf.org.uk/earthhour to register your pledge. The MEA are monitoring the Island’s response; so please contact the One World Centre and let them know if you have registered: tel 825454, or email: katie@owciom.org.

In the UK 45 local authorities and 450 school have signed up; some of the world’s best-known brands are leading the call for action from the business community; HSBC is supporting Earth Hour by pledging to turn off lights in its offices in 33 countries, as is Barclays, World famous landmarks are going into dark; or like the London Eye will be dimmed for one hour.

On the IOM The Sefton Hotel, Douglas Corporation, Tynwald buildings, among others have already made a commitment to go into darkness; and over170 private homes have already made a commitment.

The MEA are supportive of the action and have said that they will monitor the Hour to see if there is a noticeable dip in supply.

The OWC suggest it would be wonderful if we could say that we too have joined this global movement; and that some of the Island’s land marks go into darkness.

You are requested, if you can help in anyway, to please get in touch, with Katie as there is limited time and much to do; and they need as much support as possible to make it happen.
