Island charity Zero Waste Mann kicks-off ‘Compost Awareness Week’ at 10.00 a.m. on Saturday, 2nd May 2009, by selling locally produced compost. The event is being held at Dhoon Glen Car Park, Maughold, on the A2 coast road just north of Laxey.

John Kneen a director of Island compost makers ‘Ballaneven’, will be on hand to offer advice and help load the bagged compost into car boots.

Last month John Moss of Manx Radio visited Ballaneven to see compost being made and commented: "What they do produce, and I am but an amateur gardener, is lovely stuff.

This is a demonstration of what the Manx can do for themselves".

A spokesperson for Zero Waste Mann said: "A few years ago we held a similar event, selling compost bins, and it was a great success. Dhoon Glen Car Park is so convenient to pull into and load the bags into a car - it's also possible to get tea and cake at the cafe opposite after!"

They continued: "We do hope the Manx public will support this event and buy this locally made product. Compost Awareness Week is all about learning how to make a difference with compost. We can do that by composting our own household kitchen and garden waste or making the ‘Green Choice’ of purchasing locally produced compost - remember it hasn't travelled far".

Manx Radio's midday ‘Talking Heads' programme on Friday May 1st will have Martin Birchenough, the other director of ‘Ballaneven’, offering listeners advice on composting. Also on hand will be compost expert Mark Irwin of Manx mushroom growers ‘Greeba Farm.
