Next PAG meeting - Public Sector Pensions: What are the Options?
The Positive Action Group’s next public meeting will be a presentation by Douglas Anderson FIA; a partner in Hymans Robertson LLP.
Earlier this year IoM Government paid leading pensions’ Consultants, Hymans Robertson, £100,000 to produce a Report – ‘Design Proposal for a unified Pension Scheme for Public Servants’.
Following 6 months consultation with stake-holders (although this is disputed by some parties) CoMin will report back to Tynwald next month.
Presentations have been organised for the 29 employer and member interest bodies (e.g unions and employee associations plus Government Departments); and reported on by the local media.
PAG says it is significant that the opening paragraph of the Report states: "Our brief is to design a single, final salary, pension scheme whose benefits are affordable for the people of the Isle of Man, which is capable of being administered efficiently and which is valued by its members.”
However, according to PAG, the people, so far, have not had chance to air its views on this important matter; and go on to remind the public every year the tax payer puts millions into the Public Sector Pensions Reserve.
Its book value is £206 million (16%) of an estimated total liability £1.3 billion!
That's why P A G feels it is important for you, the public, to hear the issues and
make your voice heard.
They ask: can we continue to afford the existing complicated schemes? What is the alternative?
Douglas Anderson, who knows this topic inside out, will present a clear insight into
the looming financial burden for the Island. This will be followed by Q & A session.
Do come. Bring friends and family and support this final P A G event before the summer break.
7.30 pm, Monday, 22nd June, 2009 Manx Legion Club, Market Hill, Douglas. Admission is free.
