Liberal Vannin Party unsurprised by mass resignations

The LVP has issued a lengthy press release following the announcement that 6 local authority members have resigned from the party.

Onchan Commissioner Steve Babb, Michael Commissioner Michael Neary and Douglas Councillors, Carol Malarkey, John Faragher, Richard Kissack and Sara Hackman all resigned stating dissatisfaction with the executive committee of LVP remaining un-elected and the lack of direction in the party.

The full press release is reproduced below.

The Liberal Vannin executive is not surprised by the departure of some of its local authority representatives as for some time their actions/inaction have indicated their lack of commitment to the Party’s ideals and structure. Party politics requires a certain commitment and discipline that these members were unable to give. There is a meeting of the executive this Friday and already on the agenda was the withdrawal of membership from some of these people because of their unacceptable behaviour and attitude. The executive will keep to the principles that the Party was initially formed for and feels that these resignations show these people in their true light.

The executive hopes that, unlike Bill Malarkey MHK, they will do the honourable thing and resign their seats and stand for re-election as independents. It is also hoped that those members who have loans from the Party will repay them immediately.

This is just the remnant of the Bill Malarkey affair where people thought they were bigger than the Party, not wanting to be accountable for any of their actions whilst under the Party ticket. When the Party was formed and the constitution agreed, executive members were given a term of office of three years. Party Leader, Peter Karran MHK, has re-iterated his confidence in both the chairman, Kate Beecroft, and the other members of the executive. Executive members will see their term of office out and will continue the difficult process of developing a proper political party in the Isle of Man in order to create audit and accountability both at national and local level.

The executive has noted that people of supposed intelligence obviously had not bothered to read the constitution and had they done so they would have been aware of the position.

Most of the names on this list are not a surprise to the executive and in fact the executive believe that they have acted in too conciliatory a manner in the past with the inaction of some and they not honouring the commitments they gave when they signed up to become representatives of the Liberal Vannin Party.

The Party Leader had previously called for a meeting of all local authority members and this will go ahead as planned. Liberal Vannin are hosting a coffee morning from 10.00 to 12.00 at the Liverpool Arms on Saturday 22 November with half of the proceeds being donated to Graith, the Manx charity for the homeless and the meeting will take place after that.

The scheduled branch meetings will go ahead as follows:

Northern Branch8.00pm on Monday, 10 NovemberMethodist HallWaterloo Road

Ramsey

Central Branch8.00pm on Wednesday, 12 NovemberLiverpool Arms

The executive understands that many Party members will be relieved that these people have resigned and, in the interest of transparency, any member who wishes to see the various correspondence that lead to this situation can contact Chairman, Kate Beecroft who will be happy to comply.
