What should be done about the loss of the Reciprocal Health Agreement

LVP says that Eddie Teare is not a poker player and asks “Is Tony Brown beginning to smell the coffee?”

The Liberal Vannin Party (LVP) has issued a press release following the announcement that Chief Minister, Tony Brown, is to ‘dust off’ the Report into the Scope and Structure of Government and he will now seriously consider the proposals.

LVP say they are “delighted” by this development as the Report makes many proposals for improving the efficiency of government; and LVP has been saddened by the lack of interest shown up to now by the current regime.

Maybe, they say, Tony Brown is beginning “to smell the coffee” - to use a phrase he has used in Tynwald. Liberal Vannin hopes so and supports this move.

Liberal Vannin also supports the Speaker, Garth MHK, Steve Rodan, in his efforts to retain the ‘Reciprocal Health Agreement’. People, they say, seem to be now realising the full implications of the situation and Liberal Vannin hopes that the Private Members Bill being put forward by Party Leader, Peter Karran, will now receive the necessary support. The Bill is proposing an entry and exit levy on all travel. If the move gains sufficient support, the funds raised will be used to pay for health insurance for Manx residents who travel to the UK and for tourists visiting the Island.

In LVP’s opinion it is vital that the Island has a Plan B ready in the event that Mr Rodan’s efforts prove futile. Liberal Vannin also acknowledges the work by Isle of Man Newspapers in maintaining a high profile on this issue and agrees that Steve Rodan should be the one to meet with UK Health Secretary, Andrew Burnham MP (who at this stage has said he is not ‘minded’ to change the decision).

LVP believe it is vital that whoever attends this meeting, which could be as early as this week, is prepared to put the case for the Isle of Man in the strongest of terms; and that Health Minister Eddie Teare has proved that he already has a negative attitude.

In LVP’s words: “You cannot play poker if you have already revealed your hand”.

Making Fools of Pensioners on 18 January, 2010 01:36:56

Never mind “smell the coffee” how about “smell the stink of corruption” emanating from the Isle of Man Office of Fair Trading (Ombudsman Office) and Financial Supervision Commission who have steadfastly refused to act in the matter of the directors of the Island based Premier Low Risk Fund plc selling an investment fund in the EU without a licence with the assistance of similarly unlicensed persons.

Hundreds of EU pensioners were persuaded to transfer their life savings to the Isle of Man by the director's advice .... including the Fund offered “Capital Security” & Guarantees” similar to a Building Society - and only minor exit charges.

The pensioners lost up to 40% of their “capital” and were forced to loose another 28% in a hidden exit charge.

The announcement that Chief Minister, Tony Brown will now seriously consider the proposals contained in the “Report into the Scope and Structure of Government” for improving the efficiency of government is long overdue.

However Mr Brown has known about the misery and despair of hundreds of pensioners for at least five years if he can’t smell this stench then he will never be able to smell coffee!
